Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipWhen we want to draw a symbol for love, we often use this.
But hearts actually look like this.
So why do we draw this?
how did the heart become a love symbol?
Don't you love with your brain?
No one knows where the heart symbol comes from.
But we do know it's been in use since the time of the Romans.
One theory is that it was simply a guess of what the human heart actually looked like.
Another theory is that the shape comes from an ancient plant called Silphium that was associated with love potions.
Either way, it's believed that the heart symbol as we know it today was used by Saint Valentine, a third century Roman saint who is remembered with a celebration on February 14th.
The symbol may have been used by him to arrange secret marriages.
People might partly associate the heart with strong emotions like love, because when we get excited to see someone, our heart sometimes beats faster.
So fast and strong we can feel it.
But hearts really have very little to do with love.
Our emotions come from a part of the brain called the amygdala.
But saying something like my amygdala is really active when I think about you doesn't quite have the same ring.
So if you care about someone, you're probably going to send them a and not a, or you could always just go with
